You have my sympathy, as I went through
months and months of pain and tests to
try to determine the source of my
disabling headaches. I did pass out
four times, once while crossing a very
busy city street.

Mine were caused by Nutrasweet.

Nutrasweet, or aspartame is an artificial
sweetener. It is rarely diagnosed, as
few people are actually allergic to aspartame. Rather the compound can
form dangerous compounds. I am still
not diagnosed with aspartame poisoning,
but when I ceased using it, the headaches
went away. The official numbers of people
with artificial sweetener reactions are
growing rapidly, even though most of us
simply quit using nutrasweet and get better.

You did not mention if you were keeping
a daily food journal. You did mention
your grandmother's trigger was citrus.
Citrus and caffeine are two of the big
cluster headache triggers, and are implicated
in migraines as well, although migraines
usually come with an aura.

If you use anything with artificial sweeteners
in it, you may try giving it up, to see
if that could be the cause. Dehydration
and caffeine could also be your problem.

Try to find some way of getting tests.
Even if you must have someone take you the ER when you
feel a blackout coming on. i

Regardless of your insurance situation, you need to go to a doctor soon especially if you are now experiencing fever with back pain. Yes, it may be moving upwards into the kidneys.

Antibiotics will be the necessity and generally are not that expensive but expense aside, you need to be seen. If not by a private doctore, then the ER.

Asking medical questions on Yahoo Answers is OK sometimes but you can't believe everything people say like the lady who said go to the emergency room. You can't even be sure that you have a bladder infection unless you have had a urine test that comes out positive. Sure there are the normal signs that something is probably wrong like the burning sensation when you urinate and the need to urinate frequently, but sometimes even though symptoms are not a bladder infection. You might have a kidney infection but let the doctor determine that when you go in to the immediate care clinic. And antibiotics don't cure everything. There are a lot of homeopathic remedies too that will work just as good.

A matter of a day or two is all it takes. Some may never become a kidney infection. You may never have an initial bladder infection prior to a kidney infection. I used to get kidney infections alot but without bladder infections, and whenever I get a bladder infection, it's sure to become a kidney infection within a matter of 48-72 hours for me. Sucks if symptoms begin on a friday night!

You most likely will NOT need a hospital stay. I've never had to stay in the hospital for a kidney infection. They'll prescribe you an antibiotic and tell you to drink plenty of fluids to keep your kidneys flushing themselves.

Relax! It's painful but it's not the end of the world. Just get treated sooner than later because an untreated kidney infection can damage your kidneys.
